Ask anybody what the best music band is and the answer will invariably be The Beatles. With a body of work littered with numerous number one hits, the English rock band from Liverpool has entertained music listeners for over 50 years. The band, to this day, continues to have strong album sales in the form of compilations and greatest hits albums. The Beatles are often cited by other music groups as a source of inspiration, and covers of their songs are plentiful.
The band is composed of guitaristists John Lennon, and George Harrison, bassist Paul McCartney, and drummer Ringo Starr. The group initially played in various clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg before hitting it big with the track ‘Love Me Do’. They achieved worldwide success after touring various parts of the globe while continually pumping out new music albums. Their music albums were notable for the depth of quality, as opposed to the trend during the time of albums with a few hits mixed in with filler tracks.
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is generally considered to be their finest album. Initially conceived after the band grew tired of their extensive touring, the Beatles decided to take their musical experimentation to greater heights. The concept of the album involves the titular band, with the Beatles playing music as if they were actually the Sgt. Pepper band. The album was a tremendous success, and paved the way for future concept albums to be released in the future by other bands.
Largely contributing to the band’s success was their willingness to experiment with different musical genres and instruments. The songs ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘I Am The Walrus’ are examples of their forays into psychedelic rock, while ‘Norweigan Wood’ featured the use of the Indian instrument the sitar. In addition to this, the band also had three quality songwriters in Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison, with all three sharing songwriting duties in most of the albums.
