Avengers-fever is sweeping the nation, and the excitement for the massive superhero film is likely to hit a crescendo when Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters this July 2011. Chris Evans plays Steve Rogers, a sickly teenager who volunteers to take an experimental Super Soldier serum that eventually turns him into the titular character. Captain America first debuted in the 1940s and was immensely popular during the period, coinciding with World War II.

The so-called Super Soldier was primarily depicted fighting against his arch-enemy the Red Skull, a Nazi general with plans of world domination. Although he is not a superhuman, Captain America has the strength, speed, and stamina of a peak-human. He is equipped with a vibranium shield painted in the American flag’s colors and it is regarded as a symbol of the character. Captain America’s defining characteristic is his leadership. He is the undisputed leader of The Avengers and is often seen leading the team into battle with the shout “Avengers Assemble!”

The Avengers are a superhero team composed of Marvel’s mightiest heroes. The core members of the team are Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor. Other members to be included in the film are Hulk, Hawkeye, and the Black Widow. Marvel Studios is aiming to create a shared movie universe for most of its characters. The studio has already released highly successful films such as Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and most recently, Thor. In Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel hopes to introduce viewers to the Avengers’ charismatic leader while serving as a launching point for The Avengers, set for release in 2012. Robert Downey, Chris Hemsworth, and Scarlett Johansson will reprise their roles as Iron Man, Thor, and the Black Widow. Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner join them as The Hulk, and Hawkeye. Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator and part-time comic book writer Joss Whedon directs.
